WRITING EFFECTIVE LETTERS WORKSHOP
This workshop will help participants examine the role and need for letters to editors, members of legislative bodie and other organizations. Participants will review the kind of issues and times when letters are most effective; read examples of effective and ineffective letters; examine various organizations' policies on letters; and read specific advice offered by some advocacy organizations about letter-writing. Participants then will learn the primary rules of clean, efficient writing and finish brief exercises in clean sentence-writing. They will learn the specific components of an effective letter, including the need for research and accuracy, and finish the workshop by writing a letter on an issue they feel strongly about.

Sheryl James is a Pulitzer Prize-winning, veteran journalist who has worked for three major daily newspapers and several magazines in Michigan. She also has taught feature writing and magazine writing courses at Eastern Michigan University, Wayne State University and University of Detroit-Mercy. She currently is a freelance writer, editor, lecturer and speaker. She lives in Brighton, Michigan with her husband; the couple has two adult children.
